David Gilmour Guitar Auction

Non-big ticket items from today's David Gilmour guitar auction in NY.

Industry News June 20, 2019

So as I sit here waiting for a delayed flight to board from Detroit to New York (unfortunately for work, not to attend today’s auction) I figured I’d put some thoughts together on some of the cooler pieces in todays auction. I’m going to skip all of the big ticket items because I think those have been covered pretty well and instead focus on some of the smaller ticket items that would be amazing to own.

Edit: Wow – these prices are hilariously low compared to what they actually are selling for. Adding prices as they are realized. So far off by a magnitude of 100 at least.

Just found this amazing 3d map of the guitar auction setup as well! Cool.

PACKHORSE CASE COMPANY LTD.

Lot 126 - Travel case - $1k-2k

It’s a travel case with “Pink Floyd. London.” stenciled on it. How cool is this. I really hope this ends up back on the road somewhere but it’ll realistically end up on display in someones music room. Oh well, amazingly cool anyways!

Edit: Final price USD $175,000

ZB GUITAR COMPANY, KINGSLAND, CIRCA 1977

Lot 10 - 10 String Pedal Steel Guitar - $2k-3k

Seriously, how cool would this be to own? I’m super fascinated with pedal steel guitars in general and this is a decent price for one of these in general – added bonus of being previously owned by one of my guitar heroes.

Edit: Final Price. USD $93,750

THE AMPEG COMPANY INCORPORATED, LINDEN, 1969

Lot 36 - Dan Armstrong Guitar - $2k-3k

Again, these instruments are incredibly cool in general and even cooler when owned by David Gilmour. Everything I’ve read about these is just raving about how cool they look / sound. Other than weighing an actual metric ton and being basically unplayable on stage this would be a great instrument to own.

Edit: Final Price. USD $68,750

NATIONAL STRING INSTRUMENT CORP, LA, CIRCA 1940

Lot 64 - Double Neck Lap Steel - $1k-2k

This may be my fascination with these instruments showing but man, what a cool instrument. Vintage, cool as all hell. I bet this sounds incredibly cool as well. I’ll definitely buy a lap steel at some point this year but man this would be a cool one.

Edit: Final Price. USD $52,500

FENDER MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS CORP., 1987

Lot 72 - Pink Strat Plus - $1.5k-2.4k

A pink strat with David Gilmour pickups? This is a great price for an american strat anyways. I’d be all over this one – so hyper cool. I’m guessing this has his favorite 57 profile neck and everything. This is a really great low price lot.

Edit: Final Price USD $100,000

Lot’s of people are going to own pieces of history today and Mr. Gilmour is doing a great thing by donating all of this money to charity. Good on him. Can’t wait to see what the final price on the Black Strat is. Will update this article later.
